A Key to Fighting Diabetes? ¶
What if something as ordinary as coffee is secretly a key to fight diabetes, hiding in plain sight? Researchers at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in China have made a discovery that roasted coffee beans contain previously unknown sugar-inhibiting compounds, compounds needed to reverse diabetes.
The compound works by targeting an enzyme responsible for breaking down carbohydrates into sugar, which could help lessen blood sugar spikes. In laboratory tests, the molecules were even more potent than a common anti-diabetic drug. Though they haven’t conducted a test on humans yet.
While coffee on itself is not a cure to diabetes, this discovery gave us insights about the existence of these previously unknown compounds, which experts may eventually be able to utilize in the future. It suggests that some of the solutions we have been searching for have always been there all along.
